“Washed in on the Salt” was a project borne of the tides. It documented coastal landscapes, focusing on areas that have recently experienced a natural disaster as well as on places where tangible evidence of a violent storm continues to wash ashore. The catalyst for “Washed in on the Salt” was the October 2012 hurricane that struck the east coast of the United States, ravaging the northeast and wreaking havoc on New York City. In the storm’s aftermath, I discovered many personal possessions washed up along the beaches where I walk. Photographing and re-assembling this strange collection of items became a way of coming to grips with not just my city’s loss of immunity to storms of this scale, but to a world transformed by global warming. Many of these object represents a loss to a real person somewhere.Others were symbolic of waste and abuses of humanity on our planet.
Eventually becoming On the Salt, it represents the ruins of a society hellbent on destroying itself.
